TYPE A is my first watch model. It began with a simple question: What would a watch look like if I made one I wanted to wear myself?
I’ve always been drawn to watches from the 1970s and 1980s. Their shapes are often bold and clear. They have a technical feel, as though they were made to be worn every day.
The visual world of that era, during the Cold War, also stayed in my mind while I worked on the design. I wanted TYPE A to carry some of that atmosphere without recreating a watch from the past.
Copying another maker’s design was never an option for me. I wanted the watch to feel familiar and a little vintage, but still have a shape of its own.
I drew countless designs and built prototype after prototype. Each time, something still didn’t feel right. The process took so long that I almost gave up.
But I didn’t want to settle for a shape I wasn’t happy with.
Wearing the prototypes showed me what I needed to change. The crown pressed against the back of my hand, so I recessed it further into the case.
That is the kind of detail I couldn’t fully judge from a drawing. I had to build the watch and wear it to find out.
Eventually, the TYPE A case took shape: broad, with softly rounded edges and a strong silhouette. I kept the dial simple and easy to read, letting the case give the watch its character.
I chose the NH36 because I wanted both the day and date on the dial.
It is a proven automatic movement that I trust for everyday wear. Thinking ahead to servicing or a possible replacement, it also made sense for my first model: I wanted to use a movement that would help keep future costs manageable.
From the beginning, I knew I wanted this watch to come from my own hands. I didn’t want to draw it and send the manufacturing to someone else.
I wanted to stand at the lathe and milling machine, make the case myself and assemble the watch. That work is at the heart of GOSSERT for me.
It matters to me that people can see how TYPE A came to life. If you’re interested in the watch, I want you to be able to see more than finished product photos.
